We are in for another great week of learning new routines, practicing old ones, and building reading stamina!
Students will get more time to practice PICKING a "good fit" book for independent reading time. P - What is your Purpose for picking a book...learn something? for fun? I - What is your Interest? C - Do you Comprehend what you are reading? and K - Do you Know most of the words?
We also practice 3 ways of reading: Read the words, Read the Pictures, Rereading books we already know.
We will also continue our Pattern Book unit in Writing Workshop. After looking at books we have found that patterns can be organized in different ways: counting books; list books; opposites; same words/same phrases.
We have also looked at List Poems by Georgia Heard and others. We have even started our own list poems.
I am looking forward to reading our forever books with the class and guessing Who is Who from our baby pictures!
This week we will also review the following word wall words from the kindergarten list: see* can* fun* that* you
The * by some of the words indicates that it is a helper word. Helper words have chunks that "help" students make other words. (Example: can: man, ran, fan, van, tan, than) We will also practice these words in booklets. Once students have learned this routine. These booklets will be sent home for homework, as an optional way to practice the first grade word wall words. This word wall word homework routine will not begin until the week Sept. 23rd.
Be on the lookout for a Math Newsletter about Unit 1. At the end of each Unit you will receive a packet of Home Links to work on at home. These pages are worksheets that reflect what we have done in class and should not be done all at once. It is not a requirement to turn in Home Links when completed. I leave it up to families to decide what works best for you.
I will explain my homework policy further at curriculum night. Our usual homework will not begin for several weeks.
