It was a short week! We still accomplished a lot!
WRITER'S WORKSHOP - We got together for the first time with our fourth grade buddies from Mrs. Sebaggala's class and read our personal narratives. The fourth graders helped our students complete a reflection sheet about their writing. After that, they read books together. We'll try to get together with our buddies again in December.
We have also begun our next Writing Unit - Opinion Writing - Toy Review. First we discussed the difference between an opinion and a fact. Next, we read a variety of books and practiced writing an a opinion. Some books we read were: Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal; The Spoon also by Amy K.R.; The Perfect Pet by Margie Palatini; and Night of the Veggie Monster by George McClements
Next week we will begin to explore what a Toy Review may look like and sound like. It's a good time to get out those toy catalogs to see how toys are described. What else do we notice? (bold print, close-ups, fancy fonts, etc.)
READING - We have continued to work on retelling. We have also been writing down the characters, setting, problem and solution of the story. Students worked on this independently with "just right" books as well as whole class. Two books we read as a whole class were: Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper and I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato by Lauren Child
MATH - This we reviewed and practiced even and odd number. We said our chants: 0,2,4,6, and 8 are all even and so great!
& 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 are all odd and so fine! Students also practiced solving math problems presented in Frames and Arrows format. We will work on this further after break. We will also work on calculating coin combinations of pennies, nickels and dimes.
Social Studies - Students enjoyed learning about and discussing Holidays. We read several book about Hanukkah. A student also shared how to play dreidel with the class. We also read about Thanksgiving. Students wrote ABC books about giving thanks. ON that note....
THANK you, wonderful Willard Families, for helping us have great first grade year. Your children are all precious.
I am thankful to be a part of their learning this year. I hope you ALL have a lovely break and you are able to spend quality time with family and friends.
THE BEST!
Ms. Jean-Pierre
