Reading - We have been practicing retelling stories with partners and graphic organizers. The class has been having a good time giving me a grade when I retell a story on a scale of 1 - 5 stars (5 stars is the best). We have charted the components of a good retelling.
1. Start with the title.... "In the book______(title of the book)____
2. Charcters
3. Setting
4. Important events (share important details in sequence with temporal words like: first, then, after that)
5. Conclusion (Be sure to share the ending & if there was a problem, how it was solved)
I usually leave something out of the retelling and ask what I could do to make it better.
I also introduced different symbols to write down on post-its to use while reading. We will practice CODE IT! this week during independent reading and small group reading.
? - I have a question (I wonder something)
Star - IMPORTANT PART
LOL - Funny Part
C - I made a connection
# - Stumble word or new word
Smile - I agree!
X - I don't agree
Writing - The class had so much fun exploring TOYS last week. They each wrote a word web about the toy of their choice. After that they used an organizer to plan their opinion piece about the toy. Their job was to elaborate by using reasons to support their opinion. We practiced using words like "First of all," and "Also," and "Last, " in our writing.
We will finish up these pieces this week.
Math - We have been working on counting coins. Student have played coin exchange with partners. They roll dice and take that amount from the "bank." They make exchanges with the bank when they can. We will finish up Unit 3 this week. And begin Unit 4 soon. Look out for the Unit 3 Packet coming home soon. In Unit 4 children work with linear measures and review and extend their use of thermometer and clocks. They measure nonstandard units, such as digits and hand spans, as well as the U.S. customary units of inches and feet. They'll use rulers and tape measures to measure themselves and objects in the classroom. Children will also begin the practicing the automatic recall of basic addition facts.
Science - Last week student had a lot of fun learning about what happens when compressed air inside of a balloon get released when the balloon is placed inside a plastic bag that is attached to a fishing line by a straw! It creates a BALLOON ROCKET! The air pressure created inside the balloon was so great that the "balloon rocket" was able to shoot all the way across the line!
PBIS - We are doing a hootastic job of earning hoots. We are 5 class hoots away from our goal. This week's Cool Tool is a review of the four steps to an apology. Check the Willard Way tab for more info about that Cool Tool.
OTHER NOTES:
Now that the snow is on the ground and the temperature is dropping, it's a good idea to send in extra clothes for those days when the boots and the snow pants just don't cut it. Socks & pants often get wet during outside play and students can feel uncomfortable. It's nice to have another option.
Have a great week. Stay warm!
